The Power Of Snail Mucin

Gather round ladies, we’re about to give you the inside scoop on the latest hero ingredient to reach our shores – snail mucin! Yes, you read correctly and no we’ve not lost our proverbial marbles – we’re talking about snail mucin, that gooey trail that our slimey friends leave behind while out on their travels. As gross as it may sound, this slimey elixir has been used for skincare purposes since the time of Hippocrates (a really long time ago). As a physician in ancient Greece, he prescribed crushed snails to his patients to help alleviate their skin inflammation. More recently, snail mucin was re-discovered as a skin saviour when Chilean farmers handling snails for exportation to French eateries began noticing that their skin was getting smoother and softer…the gooey goodness miraculously made their minor cuts and injuries es-car-go-away!
For those of you worried about snail safety, fret not – our slimey friends aren’t hurt in order for us to enjoy their magical mucin. Friendly farmers collect the slime left behind by the snails while they’re travelling around the great outdoors.
The sciencey bit:
When snails are agitated, say while passing over a rough or jaggedy terrain, they release a thick fluid to protect themselves. The thick fluid – or slime – acts as a protective barrier, reducing friction between the snail’s body and the ground. As weird as this may sound, you may be surprised to know that even humans do something similar to protect their skin….well, kind of. You see, the oil your skin excretes everyday comprises lipids and sebum which moisturise the skin and help to keep it healthy. See, we’re not so different after all!
Miraculously, snail slime has also been known to speed-up healing of wounds and skin burns. One study published in The Journal of Dermatological Treatment in 2009 evaluated snail extract on 43 patients with burns. 27 people used snail cream and the remaining 16 used a placebo burn ointment. The patients using snail cream experienced a significant improvement compared to the placebo, demonstrating snail slime’s powerful healing properties.
Snail mucin extract is a blend of protein, elastin and glycolic acids – three super-ingredients for the skin! The slime is packed with skin-friendly nutrients such as glycoprotein enzymes, hyaluronic acid, proteoglycans and antimicrobial and copper peptides, which work hand in hand to rejuvenate the skin, making it brighter and softer.
